Rating of Russian Retail Pharmacies (Q1 – Q2 2017)
Against rather poor growth rates in the Russian pharmaceutical retail market, chain retailers have not ceased to actively consolidate. These deals lead to the formation of new industry leaders that sweep away everything on their way to the top, or they simply strengthen the positions of certain players in local markets. The battles for the top on the country and regional levels almost do not concern market players, which are on another level. These players are still one of the main operating forces of the Russian pharmaceutical retail industry both on a regional scale (this is mostly typical for the republics of the North Caucasus), and in the market in general.
There are about 10,800 independent pharmacies in Russia (almost 20%), and they control 19.8% of the market share in monetary terms. In addition to independent pharmacies, there are about 2,100 small pharmacy chains (3 to 9 pharmacies), which make around 7,200 pharmacies and about 9.8% of the share in monetary terms. These two conglomerates are the largest formation of the Russian pharmaceutical retail, and they are often more successful in selling pharmaceuticals than larger chains.
However, this segment of the market is still a kind of terra incognita for pharmaceutical companies. This segment is difficult to influence and interact with. The industry is also quite sure about the imminent end of the independent pharmaceutical retail, although, in our opinion, it is too early to tell.
